The Matilda swept aside Italian opponents and earned the respectful nickname "Queen of the Desert" from German forces. During Operation Battleaxe in June 1941, German forces famously had to resort to using their 88mm AA guns in the anti-tank role as they were the only effective counter against Matilda's thick armor.
